Kognitio and Genworth Financial reach migration milestone
Pan-European Data Migration Project to TIA Platform Successfully Tackles Local Challenges
BRACKNELL, UNITED KINGDOM - 13th August 2008 - Kognitio®, a leading global provider of business intelligence (BI), data warehousing and data migration solutions, today announced that it has helped Genworth Financial, a leading financial services company, successfully migrate over 12 million payment and mortgage protection policies as part of a major programme to implement a new policy administration platform across its European operations.
The Insurance Application (TIA) platform from Danish software developer TIA Technology A/S, is being implemented across Genworth to reduce operating costs and increase service levels to the company's clients. Kognitio was contracted to support all the data migration requirements of the programme beginning with a detailed analysis of the source data through to migration design, testing and implementation.
As part of this large-scale project, Kognitio has to date migrated policies in 12 European countries, with Greece and Finland next on the list alongside additional work in the UK. As a result of the international nature of this project, the team has had to face unique challenges specific to individual countries, including local tax regulations, different business practices and various product sets.
"A more streamlined IT infrastructure was pivotal to maintain our market-leading position, and consolidating our policy administration across Europe onto one platform was a key element of this process," said Ronan Hanrahan, CIO at Genworth. "Despite the significantly higher level of complexity than expected on the project, Kognitio has risen to the challenge and delivered on the brief, loading an impressive 1.8 billion rows of data to our new TIA platform since the start of the project."
In order to help make the Genworth team more self-sufficient and productive, Kognitio also developed specific tools for Genworth, which have helped automate aspects of the migration process.
"This is the largest data migration project we have undertaken to date; one of the main factors behind its success is that we have developed the processes alongside Genworth's requirements, working in tandem towards the same goals," said Roger Llewellyn, Kognitio's CEO. "Kognitio has tailored the approach taken to each country migration to ensure it has been undertaken in the most effective way possible."
To avoid disruption to the business, each migration is implemented over a weekend; however for one particular data set, the conversion process produced an astonishing 520 million rows of data, which required 32 hours of processing time. In order to cut this down and allow the migration to occur over the weekend, Kognitio used parallel processing to run four conversion processes at once on a four-processor machine, and successfully reduced the migration time to eight hours. The equivalent of 122GB of data was loaded over the course of the weekend without a single load failure.
"Despite the size of the project, Kognitio continues to meet all our audit and reconciliation requirements; I feel confident that the rest of the project will go smoothly and look forward to working with the Kognitio team to bring this extensive migration to completion," continued Hanrahan.
As a result of its participation in this project, Kognitio now holds the record for the largest volume of data migrated to the TIA platform. Over the past fifteen years Kognitio has successfully carried out complex insurance data migrations for organisations including Prudential, AXA and Allianz Cornhill Schemes. These have all been implemented using its proven methodology and its unique Data Factory Toolkit (DFTK), a comprehensive suite of tools that aids in the process of analysing, developing, building and testing data migration solutions.
