Against an economic backdrop of cost cutting and spending reductions, report indicates that adoption of data warehouse appliances is on the rise
CHICAGO, 26 January 2009 - Recent research by the BeyeNETWORK (www.b-eye-network.com) indicates that data warehouse appliances are gaining in popularity as the choice of deployment for analytical database technology. The research forms the basis of the BeyeNETWORK's Data Warehouse Appliance report issued in December 2008, of which Kognitio was a key sponsor.
According to the survey of over 200 end-users, two-thirds of respondents feel that a data warehouse appliance is a viable technology, citing the top three features of a data warehouse appliance as performance, scalability and reliability.
Furthermore, when asked whether commodity hardware was preferred as the basis of data warehouse appliances over proprietary hardware, only 10% of those asked responded with proprietary hardware, 32% said commodity was desirable. Overall, of those who had an opinion on the subject of the hardware, there was a 3:1 preference for commodity hardware.
Of all those who had been asked about their experiences of data warehouse appliance adoptation, over 88% of the respondents said in 2008 that their DWA had met their needs, up from just 11% in 2007.
"We are pleased to see that an increasing number of organizations value the benefits of data warehouse appliances and that more people value commodity hardware as the basis for their appliances," stated John K. Thompson, CEO of US Operations at Kognitio. "Kognitio customer, Groupe Aeroplan's Loyalty Management Group, that was interviewed for the report, is one such example of a company that has successfully leveraged the scalability, reliability and tailor-made performance of a commodity hardware-based data warehouse appliance in order to offer their clients a new level of customer data analytics and insight. It is clear that commodity hardware offers significant advantages over proprietary hardware in terms of performance, cost and ease-of-use."
"The most striking fact about this survey is the rapid maturation and adoption of data warehouse appliance technology," begins Ron Powell, Cofounder and Editorial Director of the BeyeNETWORK. "The respondents indicated a shift from hesitancy about data warehouse appliance installations to a feeling that the technology and solutions providers are performing well."
