The challenge of testing and auditing Data Migrations
It is usual that migrations involve and often culminate in an intense period of testing prior to and during user acceptance testing (UAT). The most significant factor in achieving a high quality deliverable is an efficient and comprehensive test programme. Experience has also shown that if a programme’s timescales slip it is often the testing phase that gets compressed. The most important single factor in keeping a quality-based test phase is the ability to cycle through test scripts quickly enough to avoid backlogging consequential test errors (errors caused by changes made during the test process). The key to this is to create a test environment that allows huge flexibility, massive performance and data load speeds that endorse short, iterative test phases.

Available as a test appliance or as a service, FastTest allows organisations to accelerate the entire testing and auditing process of a data migration and platform rationalisation project. FastTest is ideally suited to meet the challenges of complex tests programmes; FastTest can scan and read every data item in a 10 billion row data set in less than 2 seconds. This is within an industry standard RDBMS environment that allows any other tools that use SQL 2003 to benefit from this performance. In fact many organizations are now able to run extended tests that they would dare not undertake with their traditional test engines.
In traditional test architectures, designers have concentrated on processing test queries by adding multiple servers to increase computing power and adding high performance storage devices and interfaces to improve access speeds to the data. Kognitio has taken a completely different and successful approach.
FastTest achieves its very high performance rates by using Kognitio WX2, our high performance analytical database, to distribute data in memory across paralleled servers rather than distributing the queries. This allows each server to test a smaller amount of data at a much higher speed. Hence by adding servers at the same time as increasing the data size, the user can test any amount of data with no decrease in performance.
